Speaker of Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth has delivered a strong message to Members of Parliament, urging them to exercise absolute responsibility when managing public resources. He emphasized that holding public office is a matter of profound trust, demanding that leaders showcase true accountability through effective legislation, prudent resource allocation, and dedicated representation.
Speaking during an inter-religious prayers and thanksgiving ceremony held at Parliament on Friday, the Speaker was joined by Christian, Muslim, and other faith leaders who gathered to pray for the institution. Oboth highlighted the pressing demands of citizens, noting that ordinary Ugandans are looking for better quality of life, improved healthcare systems, quality schools, and reliable employment opportunities.
“Our people want a better life. Good schools and healthcare. They want jobs. They demand that we leaders lead by example and use public resources responsibly,” Oboth stated during the gathering.
He further challenged both MPs and parliamentary staff to sincerely reflect upon the daily opening prayer recited in the House, which invokes divine wisdom and guidance to handle national matters justly. According to Oboth, leadership goes far beyond merely passing legislation; it requires deep personal integrity, humility, and a readiness to acknowledge and correct mistakes.
Expressing gratitude to the religious leaders in attendance—including Bishop Samuel George Bogere Egesa of Bukedi—the Speaker noted that the spiritual event served as an important reminder for leaders to evaluate the impact of their choices. He called on the 12th Parliament to match institutional progress with an unwavering commitment to serve the citizens faithfully.
