The fundamental purpose of any functional parliament extends far beyond individual constituency projects or populist politicking. At its core, the legislature exists to create a conducive environment where the Executive arm of government can effectively deliver services and development to the citizens.
However, discussions surrounding how Members of Parliament are elected often get bogged down in campaigns focused on personal handouts, infrastructure promises, and local service delivery tasks that properly belong to local governments and administrative units. This mismatch places an undue burden on legislators and distorts their primary constitutional mandate.
When voters evaluate candidates based on their ability to legislate, scrutinize budgets, and provide necessary checks and balances, the quality of governance improves significantly. Re-evaluating the electoral framework ensures that elected representatives possess the competencies required for national policymaking rather than mere resource distribution.
