The Masaka High Court has issued a strict two-day ultimatum to the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to clarify the academic qualifications of Sembabule District Woman MP Florence Nambaziira.

The directive stems from an ongoing legal challenge brought by petitioner Mary Begumisa, who is questioning whether the legislator meets the mandatory educational requirements needed to hold a parliamentary seat.

During court proceedings, lawyer Isaac Ebiro Ekirapa, representing the petitioner, raised serious concerns regarding Nambaziira’s academic journey. He questioned how the MP managed to acquire a higher education certificate in light of allegations that she allegedly failed to complete both Primary Seven and Senior Four.

Ekirapa emphasized that the NCHE’s testimony and official records are crucial in determining the authenticity and formal recognition of the disputed academic documents. He noted that the regulatory body had previously failed to show up in court to address the growing controversy, which ultimately forced the legal team to seek a compelling judicial order.

Presiding Judge Justice Christine Akello granted the application, instructing the higher education regulator to present its position within two days. Meanwhile, Begumisa also submitted additional paperwork reportedly sourced from the Directorate of Industrial Training. According to these records, the MP holds a specialized certificate in hair plaiting, washing, and styling, which the petitioner has added to her arsenal challenging the legitimacy of the parliamentary credentials.

The unfolding legal battle highlights the growing scrutiny surrounding the educational background of elected officials in Uganda. The upcoming response from the NCHE is expected to shed light on the validity of the documents under review as the court case continues to develop.
