Schools across the Karamoja sub-region have emerged as critical safe havens for young children, offering vital protection against a biting drought and widespread food insecurity that continues to threaten local communities.

Local leaders have highlighted how academic institutions are mitigating the effects of poor harvests and dry spells. According to Mr. Sylvesto Lochiam Kubal, the chairman for Sidok Sub-county, the presence of school feeding initiatives has encouraged parents to keep their children in classrooms rather than sending them out to search for scarce food and water.

The severe weather conditions have placed immense pressure on families throughout the region. With traditional livelihoods heavily impacted by climate shocks, households struggle to secure even basic daily meals. In response, schools providing consistent meals have seen notable improvements in attendance and student retention.

Education advocates emphasize that while these interventions are saving lives in the short term, sustained regional support is essential to combat the root causes of food scarcity. Ensuring that schools remain well-stocked with food supplies is vital for the health, well-being, and academic futures of children in Karamoja.
