Life along the railway line in Bweyogerere Kireku Zone presents a stark daily contrast between hopeful expectations and deep-seated despair for the families settled there. Faridah Nakanjako, a mother of eight, and her husband are among the early settlers who moved to the area in 1990 seeking affordable housing and agricultural land. Guided by brokers who assured them the property had no encumbrances, the family purchased the plot situated about 70 meters from the main railway line for Shs800,000.
Over the years, the community expanded as numerous slums sprouted near the tracks, drawing factory employees and security guards working in the nearby industrial park. However, this fragile stability has been severely tested by government efforts to reclaim railway land. Promises of compensation from officials initially filled residents like Mr. Busulwa with hope, inspiring plans to relocate and buy alternative land.
Yet, that optimism often clashes with the harsh reality of sudden displacements. Mr. Ssebuliba, a victim of the sweeping May 2023 demolitions, watched his rental properties reduced to rubble while waiting for compensation as a Project-Affected Person (PAP). With Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) and police actively enforcing nationwide clearance orders to reclaim encroached reserves, squatters continue to walk a tightrope between the promise of payouts and the fear of losing their homes.
