Security authorities in Arua City have apprehended a man for the alleged unlawful possession of over 1,000 rolls of suspected marijuana. The suspect was intercepted at the Link Bus Terminal located within the Central Business Division.
According to a police statement, the suspect identified as Godfrey Eguma was caught during a routine security check on Thursday morning. He was reportedly preparing to board a bus destined for Masindi District when officers intervened.
West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, Ms Josephine Angucia, confirmed the arrest. She noted that officers conducting general checks at the bus facility grew suspicious of the traveller and subjected his luggage to a thorough search.
“Upon search of his luggage, over 1,000 blunts of suspected marijuana were recovered,” Ms Angucia stated. During preliminary interrogations, the suspect allegedly confessed that the illicit cargo was meant to be sold to labourers at the Kinyara sugar plantation.
Following the discovery, law enforcement officers impounded the narcotics as exhibits and detained Mr Eguma at the Arua Central Business Division Police Station. Investigators are currently tracing the original source and suppliers of the contraband.
Police commended members of the public for sharing intelligence that aided the operation. Authorities noted that Mr Eguma will soon be arraigned in court to face charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act once inquiries are finalized.
