Security forces in Arua City have apprehended a male passenger after he was found traveling with a substantial quantity of illicit substances. The suspect, identified as Godfrey Eguma, was detained on Thursday at the Link Bus Terminal during routine luggage inspections conducted by law enforcement officers.
According to West Nile police spokesperson Josephine Angucia, officers intercepted Eguma just as he was preparing to board a bus bound for Masindi district. A thorough search of his belongings uncovered more than 1,000 sticks of suspected rolled marijuana.
During preliminary interrogations, the suspect allegedly confessed that the narcotics were meant to be sold to workers at the Kinyara Sugar Plantation in Masindi. Police have stated that investigations are currently underway to trace the original source of the contraband and to identify other individuals involved in the supply chain.
Authorities have taken the opportunity to thank members of the local community whose tip-offs and intelligence sharing made the arrest possible. Police continue to urge the public to maintain active cooperation in efforts to curb narcotics trafficking across the region.
Recent data highlights the gravity of the situation in the area. The International Organised Crime Index 2025 report designates the West Nile sub-region as a significant transit corridor for illegal drugs. Furthermore, areas including Arua City, Zombo, Terego, Maracha, and Yumbe have been flagged for local marijuana cultivation, with illicit products frequently moving toward regional markets in Kampala, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and beyond.
