The Ugandan shilling has faced renewed downward pressure, weakening to trade at the Shs4,200 level against the US dollar. This latest depreciation comes despite recent proactive measures and foreign exchange interventions by the Bank of Uganda (BoU) aimed at stabilizing the local currency.

Earlier in the week, central bank interventions managed to spark a brief and temporary recovery for the shilling. However, persistent market demand for hard currencies quickly overwhelmed the short-term relief, pushing the exchange rate back toward weaker levels.

Financial analysts note that structural demand for dollars, driven by corporate importers and global economic headwinds, continues to weigh heavily on the local unit. Despite the central bank’s ongoing efforts to manage volatility and inject liquidity into the market, external pressures and domestic demand are maintaining a tight grip on the foreign exchange landscape.

Market watchers will be closely monitoring the central bank’s next policy moves to see if further measures will be deployed to curb the depreciation trend as the financial year progresses.
