Uganda’s agricultural sector has achieved a significant milestone, with export earnings climbing to $4.609 billion—approximately Shs17 trillion—in 2025. This impressive figure marks a dramatic rise, more than doubling the decade-long historical average of $2.5 billion.

According to the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), Mr. Frank Tumwebaze, who addressed Parliament on Wednesday, this remarkable growth highlights the expanding role that agriculture plays in bolstering the national economy as farmers increasingly pursue better financial returns.

Despite the booming export market, the country still faces domestic supply challenges in certain key value chains. A notable example is the vegetable oil sector, where Uganda continues to spend around $800 million on imports annually because local production falls short of meeting domestic demand.

Industry stakeholders note that while the surge in export revenue is a major win for the economy, bridging internal production gaps remains crucial for achieving sustainable food security and reducing reliance on costly foreign goods.
