Uganda Christian University (UCU) recently celebrated its graduation ceremony, sending forth 670 newly qualified professionals equipped with degrees, diplomas, and doctorates. As the fresh cohorts stepped into the professional world, university leadership and keynote speakers delivered strong admonitions against graft, dishonesty, and the pursuit of wealth through unethical shortcuts.
Presiding over the event, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and UCU Chancellor, the Most Rev. Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, urged the graduands to remain anchored in their values. He stressed that integrity must be maintained even when no one is watching, quoting Proverbs 22:1 to remind them that a good name outshines fleeting material riches.
Echoing similar sentiments, UCU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi told the assembly that the nation does not lack learned individuals, but rather transformational thinkers capable of innovation. The graduating class featured 390 males and 280 females, including seven PhD holders, 233 master’s degree recipients, and 22 first-class honours achievers.
Meanwhile, the Rt. Rev. Prof. Alfred Olwa, Bishop of Lango Diocese and UCU Council Chairperson, noted that academic certificates alone are powerless without upright character. He challenged the fresh professionals to ask what they can contribute to society rather than solely focusing on personal gain.
Uganda Development Bank Managing Director Patricia Adongo Ojangole, who served as the guest of honour, warned that intelligence devoid of integrity poses a danger to society. She emphasized that accountability and ethical conduct are crucial for anyone entrusted with public resources and leadership roles.
