Tooro King (Omukama) Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I has committed to working closely with the Babiito royal clan, acknowledging that a monarch cannot successfully reign without the support and counsel of his royal family. Speaking during his first meeting with clan members at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City, King Nyabongo stated that he would rely on the wealth of experience held by senior clan members.
The gathering was presided over by clan chief Omujwera Musuuga Charles Kamurasi, who reminded the monarch of the historical tradition where Tooro kings cooperated with the Babiito rather than ruling in isolation. During the event, State Minister for Culture Mary Kamuli Kuteesa officially handed over the government gazette recognizing Nyabongo I as the cultural leader of Tooro, alongside two vehicles to support his official duties.
Beyond traditional governance, the King urged the Babiito to prioritize economic empowerment, strengthen family values, and safeguard Tooro’s cultural identity. He encouraged families to build income-generating enterprises, join the Babiito savings and credit cooperative organization (SACCO), and actively steer away from dangerous substance use. Furthermore, King Nyabongo announced that the Babiito will maintain bi-annual clan meetings every Easter Monday and in December.
