Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has called upon legislators to shift their focus away from seeking cheap publicity and instead concentrate on rigorous parliamentary oversight and solving national issues.

Speaking at a parliamentary whips coordination meeting, Tayebwa stressed that the true effectiveness of the House should be measured by how well its resolutions are implemented by the government, rather than the length of debates or routine complaints meant to impress constituents.

He reminded legislators of their broader responsibilities as national representatives, urging them to look beyond their immediate constituencies. Tayebwa encouraged parliamentary committees to actively conduct field visits to inspect government projects, verify public fund utilization, and ensure citizens receive genuine value for money.

Furthermore, the Deputy Speaker raised concerns regarding how parliamentary time is managed, pointing out that routine report debates often consume excessive hours. He urged MPs to thoroughly read reports beforehand to deliver substantive contributions and reserve matters of national importance strictly for urgent crises needing immediate state intervention.

Challenging the motivations of some members, Tayebwa questioned whether leaders truly sought practical outcomes or merely wanted visibility before the cameras. He emphasized that strengthening institutional capacity for evidence-based scrutiny remains vital for effective governance.
