A transformative new initiative aimed at reshaping the landscape of African cinema has officially been unveiled. Titled Reel Balance, the project is a collaborative effort spearheaded by The Ladima Foundation alongside the Durban FilmMart (DFM).
Designed to address ongoing disparities, the program focuses on embedding robust gender equity practices within film festivals across the Pan-African region. Organizers hope to create more inclusive spaces for women and underrepresented voices in the cinematic arts, ensuring fair representation both behind and in front of the camera.
The launch took place during the 17th edition of the Durban FilmMart, drawing attention from filmmakers, industry leaders, and cultural advocates from across the continent. By establishing new benchmarks for inclusivity, Reel Balance aims to empower female industry professionals and foster sustainable change within the African film ecosystem.
