Mubende Regional Referral Hospital has taken decisive action to address severe congestion by implementing a strict one-patient-one-attendant policy alongside restricted visiting hours. The measures aim to tackle mounting concerns over poor sanitation, compromised patient privacy, and security vulnerabilities within the health facility.
Hospital Director Dr. Emmanuel Paul Batibwe explained that the new directives follow alarming feedback from recent patient satisfaction surveys. The surveys highlighted overcrowding and declining cleanliness as major obstacles to effective healthcare delivery. Under the updated guidelines, unauthorized visitors, hawkers, and excess caregivers will face strict limitations.
Senior Principal Nursing Officer Jane Edith Apunyu noted that past efforts to clear the wards were difficult to enforce. With too many people crowding around beds, medical personnel have struggled to provide timely care to critically ill patients. Additionally, hospital management cited security concerns, including motorcycle thefts and imposters extorting money from vulnerable patients by posing as medical workers.
To further streamline operations, the facility has installed a digital queuing machine. Patients now register at the reception desk, receive a unique number, and are directed systematically after triage. Management has also banned motorcycles from parking within the premises to reduce yard congestion and curb theft.
While many have praised the modernization, some caregivers have expressed practical concerns regarding the single-attendant rule. Relatives argue that caring for severely ill patients often requires alternating support, especially when buying essential medical supplies outside the hospital. Serving a vast catchment population across several districts, Mubende hospital handles hundreds of outpatients and daily deliveries, making these administrative reforms crucial for sustainable public health service delivery.
