The Ministry of Health has successfully conducted trial runs for drone technology designed to transport medical supplies and patient samples between Kalangala District and specialized laboratories in Kampala. This innovative step aims to tackle the logistical hurdles faced by communities scattered across the islands of Lake Victoria.
Ms. Mbabazi Prossy, the Ministry’s project coordinator, noted that the geographical challenges of Kalangala pushed authorities to seek out aerial solutions to boost healthcare delivery. During the recent tests at Kaala grounds, a test drone successfully navigated a route from Butabika through Koome Islands to Kalangala, completing the journey in roughly an hour and a half. Officials expect this travel time to drop to about one hour once the route is fully established.
Local health workers have welcomed the initiative, highlighting the severe delays inherent in the current transport system. Mr. Frank Kisakye, in charge of Kalangala Health Centre IV, explained that the facility acts as a central collection point for sixteen health centers across the district. Previously, samples for critical tests like HIV and hepatitis had to rely on vehicles and water transport, often taking several days to reach laboratories in Kampala and delaying patient treatment.
With the introduction of drones, managed in partnership with Drone Plus, health officials anticipate that samples will reach Butabika laboratories in about an hour. This rapid turnaround is expected to yield same-day results and much faster medical interventions for island residents.
Kalangala Resident District Commissioner Fred Badda stated that the initial rollout will target health centers in Jaana, Bufumira, Kyamuswa, and Bubeke, with long-term plans to cover every island in the district. Local leaders like Buggala Island chairperson Mark Lwanga expressed relief, noting that the new technology will spare patients and couriers from navigating dangerous lake waters during stormy seasons.
