Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has assured students and stakeholders that the Bachelor of Pharmacy programme at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) maintains its valid accreditation. Speaking during a parliamentary plenary session, Tayebwa confirmed that the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) verified the course status for the next four years.
The clarification followed mounting concerns regarding a reported withdrawal of professional recognition by the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda (PSU). Tayebwa noted that the NCHE confirmed the ongoing validity of the programme, stating that students are pursuing an officially approved course.
According to the Deputy Speaker, the disagreement highlights an apparent overlap in legal mandates between the NCHE and the PSU regarding pharmacy training oversight. In response, Tayebwa directed the Minister for Education and Sports, alongside the Attorney General, to review the existing legal framework and present a detailed ministerial statement to the House.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi pointed out that the professional body’s grievances might also involve specific qualifications required for the leadership of the university’s pharmacy department. Ssenyonyi urged swift government intervention to eliminate uncertainty and protect students and graduates from academic distress.
