Legal experts in Uganda have issued strong warnings to advocates regarding emotional entanglement in clients’ cases, highlighting severe professional and psychological risks. The caution follows a recent incident at Mukono Court where two senior lawyers nearly engaged in a physical altercation during a heated election petition.
Speaking at a reproductive justice conference in Kampala, veteran lawyer Magellani Kazibwe stressed that advocates must separate their personal feelings from clients’ disputes. He noted that excessive emotional investment can spill over into a lawyer’s personal life and impair their overall well-being. Other practitioners shared similar experiences, pointing out that managing unrealistic client expectations can lead to severe workplace friction and stress.
Beyond courtroom clashes, mental health specialists underscored the hidden danger of secondary trauma. Dr Adrian Jjuuko shared his personal struggles while fighting controversial legislation, noting that continuous exposure to distressing accounts of abuse can cause post-traumatic stress symptoms. Experts emphasized that many legal professionals resist seeking professional psychological support, often enduring immense pressure in silence.
