Action is officially underway on the shores of Bunjako Beach in Buwama, Mpigi District, where Uganda’s national representatives are aiming for gold at the CAVB Zone V Beach Volleyball Championship. The regional tournament, which runs through Sunday, has brought together competitors from Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, and South Sudan.
Uganda has entered two pairs in both the men’s and women’s categories to leverage home advantage. The men’s lineup features the duos of Luc Florent Kimararungu paired with Aziizi Busingye, alongside John Baptist Ogire partnering with Isaac Ogusul. Meanwhile, the women’s division sees Claire Najjuuko teaming up with Purity Nekesa, while Margaret Namyalo joins forces with Eunice Amuron.
Women’s team head coach Shamim Makongoro expressed confidence in her squad’s readiness following an early training camp at the venue. According to Makongoro, intensive preparations and local support have the team well-positioned to keep the gold medals at home.
The tournament features varying squad sizes, with Kenya bringing the largest contingent of seven teams. Meanwhile, South Sudan is making its historic debut in regional beach volleyball competition, offering the newcomers a chance to test their mettle against seasoned opponents.
Beyond the podium finishes in Buwama, participating teams are also competing for crucial ranking points. These points will count toward the upcoming leg of the regional beach volleyball tour scheduled to take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, this coming December.
