Uganda is set to battle for top honors at the CAVB Zone V Beach Volleyball Championship, which commenced on Thursday at Bunjako Beach in Mpigi District. The host nation has deployed two teams in both the men’s and women’s categories, aiming to leverage the advantage of playing on familiar sand.
The women’s squad, coached by Shamim Makongoro, has been undergoing intensive preparations and training at the competition venue. “We are very ready as Team Uganda, and we expect to keep the gold at home,” Makongoro stated confidently, highlighting the team’s preparedness. The women’s pairs are Claire Najjuuko/Purity Nekesa and Margaret Namyalo/Eunice Amuron.
In the men’s division, Uganda’s pairs are Luc Florent Kimararungu/Aziizi Busingye and John Baptist Ogire/Isaac Ogusul. The championship, running until Sunday, has attracted participants from Kenya, Burundi, and South Sudan. Kenya presents the largest delegation with seven teams, while South Sudan makes its debut in beach volleyball.
The preliminary stage has seen teams drawn into pools. Uganda’s men’s teams are in Pools A and B, while the women’s teams are in Pools A and B respectively. Beyond the immediate goal of securing medals, the event is significant for accumulating points for the subsequent leg of the regional beach volleyball tour scheduled for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in December.
This championship represents a key opportunity for Uganda to assert regional dominance and capitalize on home-field advantage as the race for beach volleyball supremacy intensifies. The teams will be looking to translate their diligent training and the fervent home crowd support into winning performances.
