A 40-year-old taxi conductor accused of causing the death of a 20-year-old woman in a tragic road crash along Entebbe Road has been remanded to prison by the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko, Ismail Ssekidde denied five separate charges leveled against him. The prosecution stated that the incident occurred on July 19, 2026, near the Fire Brigade headquarters at Clock Tower in Kampala.

According to the charge sheet, Ssekidde was allegedly driving a white Toyota Hiace taxi when he knocked a motorcycle carrying 20-year-old Shanita Nanyonga, resulting in her untimely death. Investigators also accused the suspect of driving without a valid license for that class of vehicle, operating with reckless disregard for other road users, causing damage to the motorcycle, and fleeing the scene without reporting the accident to the police.

During the court proceedings, Senior State Attorney Allan Mucunguzi informed the magistrate that police inquiries into the matter were fully complete and requested a formal hearing date.

Although Magistrate Jatiko informed Ssekidde of his legal right to apply for bail and inquired about his sureties, the accused failed to present them effectively when asked. Consequently, the court denied bail during the session and remanded Ssekidde until November 4, 2026, when the trial is scheduled to begin.
