Member of Parliament for Older Persons (Eastern Region), Ofwono Opondo, has voiced strong criticism against security excesses, cautioning the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) against presiding over state-sponsored impunity.
Speaking during a parliamentary session focused on human rights violations and missing persons, the outspoken legislator and former government spokesperson questioned the conduct of security agencies. He firmly tasked the executive branch to account for operational abuses committed under its administration.
Opondo pointed out that the security agencies masterminding recent arrests and abductions operate directly under an NRM-led government. His remarks come amid mounting public fear and parliamentary scrutiny over a series of incidents involving armed men seizing individuals without producing them in court or granting access to legal counsel and family members.
The debate has intensified following a wave of concerning reports, including the alleged abduction of human rights activist Praise Aloikin from Namungoona Police Station and handed over to military intelligence. Compounding the panic, the whereabouts of other figures like Rwomushana remain unknown, while threats from military leadership regarding missing individuals have further fueled national anxiety.
Legislators across the political divide continue to demand transparency and accountability from security organs to restore public trust and uphold constitutional rights. Read more details about this story on Daily Monitor.
