The City Tyres East Africa Badminton Challenge 2026 concluded with a major upset in the men’s singles final, as the second-seeded Reagan Michael Nsubuga dethroned the top-seeded Muzafaru Lubega. Nsubuga clinched the title in a thrilling three-set match, prevailing 21-15, 9-21, 22-20 in a decider that saw him recover from a strong comeback by Lubega.
Lubega, the defending champion, was widely expected to retain his title, but Nsubuga demonstrated remarkable composure in the crucial moments. The final set was particularly intense, with Lubega fighting back from 20-19 to level the score, only for Nsubuga to secure the final two points needed for victory.
Nsubuga’s dominance extended beyond the singles arena, as he also secured the professional men’s doubles title with his partner Wasswa Samuel. Meanwhile, Kruthum Nalumansi successfully defended her women’s singles crown, defeating Tracy Naluwooza in straight sets, 21-4, 21-19.
The tournament also highlighted a burgeoning talent pool in the junior categories, with young players showcasing impressive skills. However, the significant increase in participation across various categories, including professional, school, university, veterans, and corporate, has brought attention to the need for improved facilities. Organizers are advocating for a larger venue with at least six courts to better accommodate the growing number of players and ensure smoother competition schedules.
This year’s event saw participation from international players from India and China, further emphasizing the need for adequate infrastructure to support badminton’s growth in the region. The success of the challenge, despite facility constraints, was made possible by the support of sponsors like the Mandela Group of Companies. Uganda also emerged victorious in the National Challenge category, finishing ahead of India.
