The Lugogo Indoor Arena witnessed high drama as Reagan Michael Nsubuga pulled off a major upset against top seed Muzafaru Lubega to claim the men’s singles title at the City Tyres East Africa Badminton Challenge.
Seeded second, Nsubuga secured a hard-fought 21-15, 9-21, 22-20 victory in the decider to shatter Lubega’s hopes of a successful title defense. Despite Lubega mounting a strong comeback in the final set to level the score at 20-20, Nsubuga held his nerve to score the crucial points needed for the championship.
Nsubuga’s dominance continued in the doubles events. Partnering with Wasswa Samuel, he triumphed in the professional men’s doubles against Joshua Ekochu and Tendo Mukalazi. Lubega managed to salvage some pride by teaming up with Gladys Mbabazi to capture the professional mixed doubles crown.
In the women’s category, Kruthum Nalumansi successfully defended her professional singles crown. After cruising through the opening set, she fended off a spirited challenge from youngster Tracy Naluwooza to win 21-4, 21-19 and cement her status as the tournament’s premier women’s player.
The five-day tournament featured intense competition across professional, school, university, veteran, corporate, and international divisions. Standout junior performances included Mariam Namutebi winning the under-19 girls’ singles, while Eric Ofoyuru claimed the boys’ equivalent. In the team competitions, Ndejje University triumphed in the university category, with Kibuli Secondary School and Mbogo High School winning the boys’ and girls’ school divisions respectively. Uganda also secured victory in the National Challenge ahead of India.
While the tournament celebrated immense talent and growing participation, organizers highlighted a pressing need for improved infrastructure. The surge in player numbers created scheduling pressures at Lugogo Indoor Arena, prompting calls for an expanded venue with at least six courts or a longer tournament schedule to accommodate future events.
