Residents and local leaders in Nakasongola District have expressed deep concern following the mysterious death of aquatic life in sections of the Lubenge wetland. Locals reported a strong foul smell, dead fish and frogs floating in the water, and widespread withering of vegetation.

According to community members, the current situation bears striking similarities to an incident back in 2023. During that previous occurrence, suspected industrial waste turned the water completely black, wiped out local fish and frog populations, and severely damaged the wetland’s ecosystem.

The latest environmental scare has left fishing communities, farmers, and nearby residents anxious about their health and livelihoods, as the wetland is a vital natural resource for the area. Local authorities are facing mounting pressure to investigate the source of the suspected toxic spillage and hold accountable any entities dumping untreated waste into the sensitive ecosystem.

Environmental degradation and industrial pollution continue to pose significant threats to various water bodies and wetlands across Uganda, sparking repeated calls for stricter enforcement by regulatory agencies to protect vulnerable communities.
