Amorigoga Primary School in Abongomola Sub-county, Kwania District, has emerged as a benchmark for educational infrastructure following a major Japanese-funded facelift. Once struggling with dilapidated buildings, severe congestion, and poor sanitation where pupils sat on the bare floor, the government-aided institution is now being held up by district leaders as a model for future community development partnerships.
The transformation materialized after headteacher Joel Ayeni incorporated infrastructure goals into a development plan and successfully applied for a grant through the Embassy of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP). The agreement was finalized in January, and construction was completed in a record-fast four months, concluding with a handover in July.
The project introduced four brand-new classrooms and modern latrine blocks, significantly improving student sanitation ratios. Furthermore, the school received 76 three-seater desks, easing seating shortages for the institution’s population of 1,145 pupils. District Education Officer Andrew Omunu noted that the quality of the Japanese-supported structures far exceeded typical locally managed builds, establishing a new standard for the district.
While the infrastructure gap remains wide across Kwania’s 58 government-aided primary schools due to resource constraints and limited parent contributions, local leaders hope Amorigoga’s success will attract additional international partnerships. For more details, read the Daily Monitor.
