Security forces in Uganda have intensified efforts to curb urban criminality, netting a total of 196 suspects during extensive operations across Kampala and surrounding areas on October 21 and 22, 2026. The crackdown targeted notorious crime hotspots known for muggings, drug abuse, and thuggery.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the swoops were conducted in several divisions including Kabalagala, Katwe, Kira Road, Nansana, and Nakawa. In Katwe alone, officers arrested 130 suspects—comprising 76 men and 54 women—during late-night raids in areas such as Busabala, Ndeeba, and Kibuye II. Officers recovered dangerous implements including pangas, a claw hammer, and suspected narcotics.
In Kabalagala, 28 individuals were cornered in Kansanga Parish for alleged involvement in drug abuse and street muggings. Meanwhile, Kira Road police picked up 14 suspects in Kyebando and Kikaaya, and Nakawa authorities detained 12 people near the Nakawa Market for public nuisance and frequenting opium dens.
During the Nansana operation, a suspect identified as Babirye Shakirah allegedly attacked a law enforcement officer with a knife while resisting arrest for suspected marijuana dealing and harboring criminals. She now faces formal charges of assault and drug possession.
Police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining the safety of residents by sustaining these targeted operations to disrupt criminal networks across the metropolitan area. Further details and updates on the ongoing screenings can be read at The Observer.
