A sports career is notoriously short-term, yet athletes often focus entirely on training while neglecting their futures off the pitch. To address this challenge, the athlete empowerment programme Beyond The Finish—run by Impact Sport in partnership with Stanbic Bank—recently hosted a comprehensive workshop at Umoja House in Kampala.
Prominent figures, including world champion middle-distance runner Halimah Nakaayi, gathered to learn vital skills such as budgeting, debt management, investment, and entrepreneurship. Nakaayi emphasized the importance of financial discipline, noting that athletes frequently get excited by early income without planning for the day the races stop.
Impact Sport was founded around three years ago by Nation Media Group sports journalist Andrew Mwanguhya, driven by a sense of duty after witnessing celebrated athletes fall into hardship and addiction once their active days ended. The initiative operates on three core pillars: Beyond The Finish for practical skills, the Legends Marathon to foster community networks, and storytelling efforts like The Game of Life podcast.
In addition to financial education, mental wellness took center stage during a session led by Nelson Mwanga of Safe Places. Facilitators stressed that athletes often suffer in silence, making open discussions about mental health and support services critical. Business coaches like Maria Kyamulabye and Vanessa Mirembe from the Stanbic Business Incubator guided participants on how to turn personal brands and sporting experiences into sustainable business ventures.
