Authorities in Ibanda District have distributed more than 50,000 tree seedlings aimed at restoring degraded landscapes and bolstering local environmental conservation efforts. The initiative specifically targets vulnerable hillsides that have suffered from human activities and subsequent neglect.

Elly Kirya, the Ibanda District Natural Resources Officer, highlighted that many local hills remain vulnerable due to limited historical replanting efforts. By distributing these seedlings, the district hopes to spark active community participation in rehabilitating damaged ecosystems.

Speaking to residents, Kirya emphasized that planting is only the beginning. Proper site selection, active nurturing, and protection against hazards like fire and stray livestock are critical to ensure the seedlings mature fully.

Echoing these sentiments, Valerian Nkesiga, the District Natural Resources Secretary, urged community members to prioritize conservation. He noted that lasting environmental recovery depends heavily on the ongoing care provided by residents after the initial distribution phase.

District officials anticipate that this project will significantly strengthen environmental defenses once the trees take root. Long-term success, however, relies entirely on sustained local commitment and diligent maintenance.
