Former Busiro South Member of Parliament, Charles Matovu, has passed away. The sad news was confirmed on Thursday evening by National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.

Expressing his shock on the X platform, Mr Kyagulanyi described the late Matovu as a dedicated comrade and fellow leader. While the NUP leader did not reveal the cause of death or mention any known illness, the sudden passing has left family, friends, and party members in deep grief.

At the time of his death, Matovu was actively pursuing a legal challenge regarding the January parliamentary elections. He had contested for the Busiro South seat on the NUP ticket during the 2026 general election, losing to Mr Kenan Opio.

Matovu’s demise comes shortly after the High Court dismissed his application seeking a review of electoral materials and documents. He had requested the court to compel the Electoral Commission to produce official report books, declaration forms, and other documents from over 100 polling stations to support his allegations of electoral non-compliance.

The court, presided over by Justice Johnson Karemani, had recently commenced the hearing of his main election petition on October 16. The legal battle sought to set aside the election of the incumbent MP, alleging that the outcome was severely compromised.
