The second deputy Mufti, Sheikh Muhammad Haruna Bukenya, has formally requested the Nigerian High Commission in Kampala to preserve and grant access to crucial CCTV footage. The recording is tied to a disputed gold transaction at the heart of an ongoing $288,000 fraud case.

In a letter dated September 14, 2026, Bukenya urged the diplomatic mission to secure recordings from August 6. On this date, meetings and discussions concerning the transaction reportedly took place on the premises.

Bukenya is currently facing charges at the Kampala City Hall Court alongside businessman Muzamiru Elias Lubega. Prosecutors allege that the accused individuals obtained $288,000 from Muhammad Kwaido under the false pretense of selling him three kilogrammes of gold. Both face charges of obtaining money by false pretence and conspiracy.

According to Bukenya, the CCTV footage will provide an objective account of the events. He noted that the engagements involved the mission’s First Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim Abdullahi, and Dr. Sadiq Adam, who allegedly participated in stages including a gold-testing process.

A laboratory report issued by Nuran-Ventures Limited on August 6 confirmed that three gold bars totaling three kilogrammes submitted by Abdullahi showed an average gold content of 99.36 percent. However, the report did not resolve the allegations currently before the judiciary.

Meanwhile, senior grade one magistrate Edgar Karakire recently issued criminal summons for Bukenya after prosecutors sought to compel his attendance. The matter has been adjourned to November 25, 2026, for further mention while the case file undergoes review by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
