In a significant move against alleged corruption, the Ministry of Local Government has instructed the Ntungamo Chief Administrative Officer to interdict 22 district officials. The group includes eight heads of departments, all facing accusations of corruption, abuse of office, and mismanagement of public resources.

Simultaneously, the Ntungamo Municipal Town Clerk has been directed to interdict five senior municipal officials. These interdictions are intended to facilitate thorough investigations by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and other relevant government bodies.

A letter dated October 19, 2026, from Permanent Secretary Benjamin Kumumanya to the Ntungamo CAO, detailed that the decision followed complaints from residents during Minister Raphael Magyezi’s recent visit. The concerns cited included gross negligence, abuse of office, and financial impropriety, which have reportedly hindered service delivery.

Among those interdicted are key figures like the Chief Finance Officer, District Education Officer, and Principal Internal Auditor. The municipality’s interdicted officials include the Municipal Inspector of Schools and the Municipal Engineer.

This mass interdiction raises concerns about the district’s administrative capacity, as a substantial number of departmental heads are among those suspended, potentially impacting future funding. Furthermore, the District Service Commission has also been suspended following orders from Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara due to alleged irregular recruitment practices, including hiring unqualified individuals.

Ntungamo District has previously been under scrutiny for corruption, with past investigations by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit uncovering issues like ghost workers on the payroll. While these allegations are serious, the guilt of the named officials is yet to be established in court, as investigations are ongoing to determine the course of disciplinary or criminal action.
