The Iteso community in Kenya is gearing up to host a major cross-border cultural festival. The three-day event, slated for October 29 through 31 at Busia Stadium in Amagoro, Busia County, will celebrate the fourth coronation anniversary of Emorimor, the esteemed cultural leader of the Iteso.
Adungo Fredrick, the Iteso Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Kenya, noted that the anniversary has been expanded into a three-day celebration to fully honor their shared heritage. The gathering aims to unite cultural leaders, business figures, and community representatives from Kenya, Uganda, and across East Africa to foster stronger cross-border ties.
In addition to traditional music, dance, a cross-border football match, and a two-day business symposium, the festival carries a strong environmental conservation mission. Organizers have launched a massive campaign to plant one million trees across the region to combat climate imbalances. Dr. Chris Baraza Obukuyi, chairperson of the organizing committee, stated that the community aims to plant 100,000 trees at churches and public institutions ahead of the official festival launch.
Delegates from Ugandan districts such as Soroti, Bukedea, and Kumi have pledged strong mobilization efforts, noting that the tree-planting initiative aligns closely with traditional Iteso culture, where major gatherings traditionally take place under the shade of trees.
Organizers have extended invitations to Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, alongside numerous government ministers and regional administrators. Alongside environmental drives like local community clean-ups, the festival seeks to blend cultural heritage preservation with sustainable community development.
