Outgoing Iranian Ambassador Majid Saffar has expressed a strong desire to see Uganda and Iran bolster their diplomatic, educational, cultural, and economic partnerships. Saffar articulated these sentiments during a farewell visit to the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) headquarters in Kampala.
Ambassador Saffar conveyed his gratitude to the Ugandan government, its Muslim leadership, and the public for the warm hospitality and cooperation he experienced during his tenure. He noted that his time in Uganda provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the two nations.
Highlighting specific areas for growth, Saffar pointed to significant potential in expanding cooperation across agriculture, scientific research, education, and cultural exchange. He also mentioned that several Iranian companies are already active in Uganda, with others actively exploring investment prospects, particularly within the agricultural sector.
“There are already some Iranian firms operating in Uganda, and more companies are willing to explore investment opportunities in areas of agriculture, such as oilseed farming and livestock production, due to the availability of land and favourable climate, among other natural resources,” Saffar stated.
Furthermore, the ambassador affirmed Iran’s readiness to enhance academic collaboration by offering more Ugandan students opportunities for higher education in Iranian institutions. Iran is also keen on sharing its scientific knowledge, research findings, and technical expertise to aid Uganda’s socioeconomic development.
On international matters, Saffar addressed the Persian Gulf conflict, characterizing attacks against Iran as aggressive and asserting that his country’s responses have been defensive and in line with international law. He acknowledged Uganda’s leadership of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) as a platform for strengthened diplomatic engagement.
Mufti Mubaje commended Saffar for his dedication to improving Iran-Uganda relations, especially his engagement with the Muslim community. He also extended condolences for Saffar’s recent loss of his father and praised Uganda’s government for upholding religious freedom.
The Mufti urged parties in the Persian Gulf conflict to pursue dialogue and peaceful negotiations. He wished Ambassador Saffar success in his future endeavors, noting the strong relationship the envoy had built with Muslim leaders in Uganda.
In appreciation, Mufti Mubaje presented Ambassador Saffar with a silver plaque and souvenirs from the UMSC.
