Google is facing an internal backlash from workers over its deployment of advanced artificial intelligence technology for military use. Several tech professionals have recently resigned or are preparing to leave Google DeepMind, citing deep concerns with the firm’s military contracts.
Sofia Liguori, a London-based research engineer who worked at Google DeepMind for three years, spoke out about her decision to leave. She stated that realizing her company is increasingly pushing for AI systems in military operations made her feel ashamed to work there, leading her to lose faith in Google’s stated ethical values.
Andreas Kirsch, another AI researcher, also resigned from Google DeepMind over similar concerns. Kirsch argued that Google’s governance and oversight are not sufficient or meaningful enough to deploy artificial intelligence safely and responsibly in classified settings. Both former employees expressed worry that the current crop of AI models lacks the robustness, testing, and human oversight needed for high-stress battlefield environments.
Google is one of several major technology companies that signed contracts with the US military to deploy AI across classified environments. US defense officials have prioritized integrating AI into armed forces to speed up operations. While Google maintains that its contracts comply with acceptable use policies and strict AI principles requiring human oversight, critics and former staff remain skeptical about how much control the company actually retains over Pentagon deployments.
The controversy also extends to international agreements, including Google’s involvement alongside Amazon in Project Nimbus, which provides cloud computing infrastructure to the Israeli government and military. As technology continues to evolve rapidly, internal dissent highlights growing ethical divisions within major tech firms regarding the militarization of artificial intelligence.
