Eight Senior Four students from Kigezi High School in Kabale District have been taken into police custody in connection with a disturbance that occurred during the ongoing Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations.

According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, the arrests stem from a “mini-strike” at the school. During this incident, it is alleged that several windowpanes and a CCTV camera were damaged.

Police responded quickly to the scene and have launched an investigation. Efforts are reportedly underway to identify and apprehend any other individuals involved in the disruption. A continued police presence has been established at the school to ensure order and prevent further interference with the examinations.

Tumushime characterized the instigators as a small faction aiming to disrupt the academic environment for their peers, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated.

Earlier, the headteacher, Abraham Akampurira, reported that the arrested students were among eleven learners who had been suspended on Monday. These suspensions followed allegations that the students attempted to leave the school premises over the weekend.

Akampurira explained that the suspended students were brought before the school’s disciplinary committee. Following their decision to suspend them, the students allegedly returned and attempted to disrupt school operations, particularly targeting security personnel.

The UCE examinations commenced last week, and the affected students have not yet finished their papers. The school administration is reportedly working on arrangements to ensure these candidates can complete their exams despite the disruptions.

This incident is being investigated by local authorities, with further updates expected as the probe continues.
