Beef Prices to Stay High Despite Rainfall, Cites Industry Leader
Despite the onset of the rainy season, consumers should not expect an immediate drop in beef prices, according to Sekanyo Suleiman, chairman of Nsooba Slaughter House. He attributes the continued high costs to factors like fuel prices, currency fluctuations, and poor rural road conditions. The anticipated relief of lower beef prices following the start of the rainy season may be delayed, according to Sekanyo Suleiman, chairman of Nsooba Slaughter House. He explained that while rainfall is beneficial for cattle pasture, it will take approximately three months for the grass to grow sufficiently to impact feeding conditions and potentially ease pressure on meat prices.
Suleiman highlighted that several economic factors are keeping beef prices elevated. These include the rising cost of fuel, which increases transportation expenses, and the fluctuating exchange rate, which affects the overall cost of doing business. Additionally, the condition of rural roads in cattle-producing regions poses a significant challenge.
He noted that poor road networks make it more difficult and costly to transport cattle from farms to slaughterhouses. While acknowledging government efforts in improving some road infrastructure, Suleiman called for further rehabilitation of rural routes that remain in disrepair. These infrastructure challenges, coupled with high fuel prices, continue to burden livestock traders and slaughterhouse operators.
Given these persistent cost pressures, Suleiman advised consumers to be patient and not expect immediate price reductions. He also urged fellow operators in the slaughterhouse business to practice financial discipline, manage expenses carefully, and cultivate a saving culture to navigate the current economic climate.
Current market prices indicate that a kilogram of stewing beef can range from Shs18,500 to Shs31,500, with minced beef priced between Shs18,000 and Shs25,000. Other meats like goat and pork, as well as various poultry products, also command significant prices, with consumers advised to shop around for the best deals.
