A powerful downpour in the early hours of Tuesday morning resulted in a tragic incident in Bweyogerere, Wakiso District, where a collapsing perimeter wall claimed the lives of four individuals, including a toddler.
The disaster occurred around 5:00 AM in Bbuto Zone, Bweyogerere Division, Kira Municipality, after torrential rains that began at 3:00 AM. The wall, separating a coffee factory from residential rental units, gave way under the pressure of accumulated stormwater, burying residents in soil and debris.
Among the deceased were David Okoth, 25; Angella Nyapeni, 28; Lucy Alaba, 28; and Alaba’s three-year-old daughter, Gracious Oseke. The young child had recently arrived from her village to visit her mother.
Residents described being woken by a thunderous crash as floodwaters surged. Survivors recounted harrowing escapes from their collapsing homes, with some being trapped by the debris.
Police have launched a formal investigation into the incident. Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire indicated that initial findings suggest stormwater runoff from the Delux Company premises exerted significant hydraulic pressure on the boundary wall. Investigations are examining whether recent renovation works and drainage arrangements at the company contributed to the wall’s failure.
Local authorities, including the Bweyogerere Division Mayor, have urged immediate evacuations from the high-risk area due to the potential for further collapses. Efforts are underway to provide temporary accommodation for displaced residents and to locate the property owners.
This tragedy occurs amidst widespread heavy rainfall across Uganda, leading to heightened flood alerts and concerns about infrastructure safety. The United Nations has previously warned of increased rainfall risks in the Lake Victoria basin.
