The upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) presents a significant opportunity for Uganda, not just in terms of sporting prestige but also as a catalyst for national development. However, the current condition of the Mandela National Stadium, commonly known as Namboole, casts a shadow over these prospects. The stadium, once a symbol of national pride, has fallen into a state of disrepair, raising serious questions about its readiness to host international football matches.

Namboole’s decline is not a recent phenomenon. Years of neglect, coupled with inadequate maintenance, have left its facilities wanting. The playing surface, seating, and essential infrastructure are far from meeting the stringent requirements set by continental football governing bodies like CAF. With less than three years until kickoff, the clock is ticking on Uganda’s ability to upgrade Namboole to a standard befitting a continental tournament.

The urgency stems from more than just hosting duties. The revitalization of Namboole is an investment in Uganda’s sporting future. A modern, well-maintained stadium can serve as a hub for local talent development, attract international competitions beyond AFCON, and stimulate economic activity through tourism and hospitality.

Stakeholders, including the government, sports federations, and private sector partners, must collaborate on a comprehensive plan. This plan should outline not only the immediate renovations needed for AFCON but also a long-term vision for Namboole’s sustainability and utilization. Failing to act decisively now risks not only jeopardizing Uganda’s AFCON hosting bid but also missing a golden opportunity to transform a national asset into a world-class sporting venue.
