Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is confronting a significant challenge with an increasing number of unidentified and unclaimed bodies at its City Mortuary. The grim reality means that for an extended period, no relatives or next of kin have come forward to claim or take responsibility for these deceased individuals within the stipulated seven-day period.
This mounting issue has put a strain on the mortuary’s resources and burial processes. Historically, the government practice was to bury each person in a separate grave. However, severe resource constraints have forced a shift towards mass burials.
In response to the overwhelming numbers, authorities are now burying multiple bodies, sometimes as many as 13, in a single grave. This practice highlights the severity of the situation and the difficult decisions being made to manage the deceased.
The standard procedure for unclaimed bodies at the City Mortuary involves meticulous documentation, DNA sample collection, and the preservation of identification records. This process is undertaken in the hope that a family member might eventually come forward. However, the current situation suggests that many of these individuals die with no one to mourn them or arrange their final rites.
The rising number of unclaimed bodies points to broader societal issues and the urgent need for improved identification and welfare systems within the city. KCCA continues to manage the situation under difficult circumstances, emphasizing the need for community awareness and support in addressing this humanitarian concern.
