Impact Sport, in partnership with Stanbic Bank, has launched an initiative designed to equip Ugandan athletes with the skills needed for financial success both during and after their competitive careers. Dubbed “Beyond The Finish,” the program offers a comprehensive approach that integrates financial education, business development support, and mental wellness.
The training sessions, held recently in Kampala, covered essential financial topics such as budgeting, savings, debt management, and investment awareness. Participants also received guidance on mental well-being, safeguarding, and available support services, recognizing the holistic demands on athletes.
This initiative addresses a critical need, as sporting careers can be abruptly cut short by injuries, age, or the loss of sponsorships. Many athletes, like Olympic marathon champion Stephen Kiprotich who transitioned to farming, have highlighted the importance of saving and investing early to ensure financial stability throughout their lives.
Through its collaboration with Stanbic Bank’s Business Incubator and Financial Fitness Academy, and with mental wellness support from Safe Places, “Beyond The Finish” aims to transform athletes’ skills and experiences into viable business ventures. The program also includes a structured mentorship phase to help participants develop and strengthen their entrepreneurial ideas.
Organizers plan follow-up sessions focused on business growth and management, culminating in a progress showcase where athletes can present their ventures. The overarching goal is to foster financial resilience and enable athletes to build sustainable livelihoods, leveraging their discipline and public profiles for economic activity beyond the sports arena.
This training is about turning commitment into practical support, helping athletes build financial resilience, explore business opportunities, and approach their futures with greater confidence. “At Impact Sport, we believe sport should not end at the finish line,” stated Andrew Mwanguhya, team lead at Impact Sport.
