Police in Iganga have apprehended Waiswa Kayeyera Mawazi, a local businessman, and two other individuals for allegedly fabricating a robbery incident. Mawazi had reported that four men in a Toyota RAV4 robbed him of Shs4.7 million on October 18, 2026, while he was travelling from Mbale in an Isuzu Elf truck.

However, a swift investigation by the crime intelligence unit, employing advanced technology such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition, surveillance footage, and communication data analysis, uncovered significant discrepancies in Mawazi’s account. Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed that the vehicle in question had not traveled beyond Iganga town on the reported day, contradicting the claim of a journey from Mbale.

Under further questioning, Mawazi reportedly confessed that the robbery had not taken place. Police investigations have suggested that the false report may stem from a dispute between Mawazi and a motor vehicle broker, Ramathan Owor, concerning an unpaid commission of Shs1.4 million from the sale of the truck. It is alleged that Owor had removed the vehicle’s tarpaulin while it was parked at a garage, apparently to recover his commission.

Following this, Mawazi, allegedly on the advice of Ali Najib, proceeded to file a false aggravated robbery report with the police, leading to his arrest. The three suspects are now being investigated under Section 115 of the Penal Code Act for providing false information to law enforcement.

Authorities are using this case to caution the public against making false reports, emphasizing that such actions not only undermine police credibility but also divert essential resources from genuine criminal investigations. The crime intelligence team has been commended for its diligence in uncovering the alleged deception.
