The Catholic Church faces a significant challenge as some priests resist transfers to new pastoral assignments, according to Msgr. Richard Kayondo, the Vicar General of Lugazi Diocese. Speaking at a commemoration for Mother Mary Kevin, an Irish nun celebrated for her transformative work in Uganda, Msgr. Kayondo stressed the importance of obedience and selflessness in priestly duties.

“The Catholic Church is facing a big challenge today because of some priests who do not want to leave certain parishes to go and work in other areas,” Msgr. Kayondo stated during prayers held at Nkokonjeru Parish Church. He contrasted this reluctance with the profound sacrifice of Mother Kevin, who left Ireland to serve the poor, combat illiteracy, and care for the abandoned in Uganda during challenging times.

Mother Kevin, born Theresa Kearney in 1875, arrived in Uganda in 1903 and is credited with pioneering girl-child education and community care. Her initiatives led to the founding of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Little Sisters of St. Francis, along with establishing numerous schools and healthcare facilities, including leprosy treatment centers.

Msgr. Kayondo urged clergy and the faithful to emulate Mother Kevin’s actions, emphasizing that her legacy is built on deeds rather than words. He also commended the Little Sisters of St. Francis for their continued mission despite financial hurdles and cautioned against spiritual apathy, referencing declining church attendance in Europe as a cautionary tale.

Sister Ritah Christine Nakitende, Mother General of the Little Sisters of St. Francis, affirmed that the anniversary honors Mother Kevin’s enduring compassion for the marginalized. She also provided an update on the ongoing process for Mother Kevin’s beatification and canonization, encouraging continued prayer for its advancement.

This year’s commemoration theme was ‘A Tribute to Mother Kevin’s Passion for the Poor and Marginalized.’
