Uganda Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the brutal killing of Sgt. Maj. Robert Kabera, a former Rwandan soldier and vocal critic of President Paul Kagame.
Kabera, aged 50, was found dead on Saturday morning in Luwala Village, Kammengo Sub-county, Mpigi District. His body was discovered without its head, which has yet to be recovered, prompting a significant police operation.
Sources indicate that Kabera had sought refuge in Uganda around 2020, reportedly fearing for his life due to his outspoken criticisms of the Rwandan government. His death has raised concerns about the safety of dissidents seeking asylum in neighboring countries.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating that all available resources are being deployed to find the missing head and apprehend those responsible. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could aid in the investigation, emphasizing the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The incident has drawn parallels to previous alleged assassinations of Rwandan dissidents abroad, including the cases of Patrick Karegeya in South Africa. The Ugandan police are working to establish the motive behind Kabera’s murder and whether it has any connections to his political activities in Rwanda.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the nearest police station or the Uganda Police toll-free line. The investigation is proceeding with urgency as authorities work to piece together the events leading to this violent crime.
