A remarkable incident unfolded during the recent Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams when a Senior Four student from Light Secondary School, Soroti, gave birth. The student delivered a baby boy on October 13th, coinciding with the morning English paper.

According to Jennifer Kalule Musamba, UNEB Principal spokesperson, the student received immediate attention from the school’s health team. Despite the circumstances, she was able to complete her English paper and subsequently sat for all other scheduled examinations throughout the week.

UNEB emphasized its commitment to ensuring all registered candidates have the opportunity to complete their exams, stating, “It is our duty to ensure that all duly registered candidates presented to us at the time of the examination sit their papers, as long as they are able to.” The examination body acknowledged that while teenage pregnancy is not condoned, registered candidates are permitted to take their exams.

The exams period also saw other incidents, including the investigation of four individuals claiming to be security officers found collecting information at Queen of Martyrs School. Separately, a candidate at Old Kampala Senior Secondary School is under investigation for allegedly photographing a mathematics paper with a mobile phone.

In Lira, two individuals, including the City Inspector of Schools, were arrested in connection with alleged extortion from head teachers. Meanwhile, the head teacher of Kazo Central Secondary School was arrested for allegedly barring three candidates from sitting their English exam due to outstanding school fees.

Kalule urged candidates to maintain discipline, warning that acts of indiscipline could lead to disqualification, cancellation of results, or arrest. Parents were also advised to caution their children accordingly.
