Principal Judge Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo has emphasized the critical need for judicial officers handling election petitions to manage their demanding caseload with efficiency and care. During a recent visit to Lugazi High Court, Justice Abodo inspected the progress of election petition hearings and engaged with judicial officers and support staff regarding their working conditions and operational challenges.

Justice Abodo acknowledged that while funding issues had caused a slight delay in the commencement of hearings, the Judiciary remains committed to resolving these electoral disputes within the legally prescribed timelines. She urged officers to provide regular updates on case numbers and promptly report any petitions likely to exceed the allocated timeframes.

The Principal Judge described the handling of election petitions as a significant national duty, thanking judges for taking on these responsibilities alongside their regular duties. She stressed that the fair and timely resolution of electoral disputes is crucial for public confidence and national stability.

Regarding courtroom management, Justice Abodo instructed judges to maintain order, regulate attendance, and collaborate closely with security, especially given the court’s location near a busy market. She directed that proceedings should not be livestreamed and discouraged the use of mobile phones in court. Emphasis was placed on proper witness management to ensure the integrity of testimony.

Recognizing the considerable pressure on judicial officers, Justice Abodo urged them to prioritize rest, stick to weekday schedules, and avoid letting advocate emergencies disrupt court proceedings. She also encouraged the use of wellness facilities and mutual support among staff, acknowledging the emotionally taxing nature of judicial work.

Justice Abodo also commended the registry and support staff for their vital logistical and administrative contributions, thanking them for their dedication despite operational constraints. She announced that the Lugazi team would join a program promoting learning, collegiality, and wellness through shared experiences.

Concerns raised by staff regarding welfare and working conditions were welcomed, with Justice Abodo pledging follow-up actions. She indicated plans for further field visits to better understand the operational environments of judicial officers across different court stations.
