Authorities in Uganda have announced the arrest of another suspect, Ayub Obogere, 28, in connection with recent killings in the Ibanda and Kazo districts. The arrest, made on October 15 in Mbarara City, is part of an ongoing effort by security agencies to dismantle a criminal gang allegedly responsible for several violent incidents.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke stated that Obogere has allegedly admitted to participating in the attacks, which involved both murder and theft. His information is expected to aid investigators in locating other members of the suspected group. Obogere has also been linked to the murder of Rashida Asimwe in Kazo District on August 27, 2026.
These arrests follow a wave of violence in August. One incident in Ibanda District saw a family attacked with machetes, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, Kenguto Margaret, 76, and Kwesiga Anthony, 13. In Kazo District, Rashida Asimwe was reportedly sexually assaulted and strangled, with her attackers also stealing valuables.
The intensified security operations, including increased personnel and logistical support, were initiated after the Inspector General of Police visited the affected regions. Police are collaborating with other security agencies on intelligence-driven operations.
Furthermore, two other suspects allegedly involved in purchasing stolen property from the gang have been identified. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full extent of involvement for all arrested individuals and to identify any other potential accomplices. Security operations are set to continue until all suspects are brought to justice.
