Residents of Seeta Namuganga Sub-county in Mukono District are growing increasingly frustrated with the prolonged delay of the Shs1.2 billion Matumbwe River crossing project. The project, which was awarded to Jefflen Industrial Solutions Ltd in May 2026 with a 10-month completion deadline, has yet to see any construction commence.

This inaction has turned the river crossing into a dangerous obstacle, particularly during rainy seasons. Traders report significant difficulties in transporting goods, impacting local commerce. Navigating the flooded waters, whether by foot or motorcycle, poses a considerable risk, with some residents describing the experience as frightening.

The impact extends to vulnerable populations, with schoolchildren often forced to wade through dirty water to reach their educational institutions. This not only disrupts their attendance but also exposes them to potential health hazards. One student reported incurring extra travel costs to reach examination centers due to the impassable river.

Local leaders and residents are urging the Mukono District authorities to take decisive action. Concerns have been raised about the district’s oversight in ensuring the project’s timely implementation. Calls are being made for the district to consider terminating the contract and pursuing legal recourse against the contractor if work does not resume promptly.

The Mukono District Engineer, Herbert Lutwaama, acknowledged the contractor’s failure to report to the site despite being provided with the necessary project requirements. The district is reportedly considering recommending the cancellation of the contract to the Ministry of Works and Transport. For now, the stalled project continues to impede the daily lives and safety of the residents.
