The legal team representing former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago is intensifying efforts to secure an expedited hearing for his bail application, following a significant decline in his health while in custody.
Lukwago was recently admitted to the hospital after his condition worsened. His lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, confirmed the hospitalization, stating that the family is prioritizing his care and is currently unavailable for further comment.
Despite the urgent nature of Lukwago’s health crisis, his lawyers have not yet succeeded in obtaining a date for his bail hearing from the High Court. “We are doing our best to see if we can get a date to hear his bail application. Unfortunately, so far, we haven’t succeeded. But he is in bad shape,” Sseggona stated.
A previous court session was postponed when the presiding judge had to attend to a family emergency. Although an alternative date was promised, it had not been confirmed at the time of reporting.
Securing the bail hearing is paramount for the defence, as it would allow Lukwago access to necessary medical attention. They are also exploring options for specialized treatment abroad, potentially in India, should he be granted temporary liberty.
This marks Lukwago’s fourth attempt to be released on bail since his arrest on June 15, 2026. He faces charges of misprision of treason, related to an alleged plot to overthrow the government. His prolonged detention, the defence argues, poses a severe risk to his life and limits his access to adequate medical care.
Previously, court orders had facilitated his transfer to Mulago National Referral Hospital for medical assessment and treatment. Efforts to get a comment from the Uganda Prisons Service were unsuccessful.
