The Iteso community in Kenya is preparing to host a significant cultural event, marking the fourth anniversary of the coronation of their Paramount Chief, Papa Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot III. Scheduled to take place from October 29 to 31 in Malaba, Busia County, Kenya, the celebrations are anticipated to draw substantial international and regional attention.

Organizers anticipate the attendance of prominent leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. The guest list also reportedly includes royalty from Eswatini, the Zulu, and Ndebele communities, alongside over 80 kings and queens. The event, themed “Celebrating our cultural diversity and heritage, building our palace,” is expected to attract around 50,000 visitors and foster stronger cross-border relations and economic cooperation.

Beyond cultural showcases, the anniversary program includes a symposium, exhibitions, a football tournament, and traditional music performances aimed at preserving and promoting Iteso heritage. A notable initiative tied to the event is a plan to plant over one million trees in schools and churches, addressing concerns about climate change and environmental conservation.

Dr. Chris Obukui, chairperson of the planning committee, emphasized the event’s role in unifying communities and supporting business. Dismas Esamai, another committee member, highlighted the importance of passing on life skills to the youth and empowering women in business.

As the Iteso community, estimated at 600,000 in Kenya and three million in Uganda, gathers, there is a call for greater recognition of the Iteso minority in Kenya. The anniversary celebrations aim to promote a sense of belonging, unity, and cooperation among Iteso people on both sides of the border and reinforce the enduring relationship between Kenya and Uganda.
