Social commentator Frank Gashumba has made it clear that he will not issue an apology to Christians regarding his recent criticism of religious leaders. Despite a direct call from the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, demanding an apology, Gashumba remains defiant.

Speaking on a local radio station, Gashumba clarified that his remarks were strictly aimed at individuals he describes as false preachers. He argued that these questionable religious figures exploit vulnerable believers by making fake miracle claims and promising unrealistic financial breakthroughs without addressing real-world poverty.

“I have never said that God does not exist or that Jesus does not work. I am speaking about false preachers. Why apologise?” Gashumba stated.

The controversy intensified after Gen. Muhoozi took to social media over the weekend to address the issue. Muhoozi stated that Gashumba would need to apologise to the Christian community and explicitly distanced the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) from Gashumba’s remarks, noting that the political group has no issues with pastors in the country.

Gashumba’s refusal to back down has further fueled a widespread debate across Uganda concerning the limits of public commentary on religious matters. While many citizens support increased scrutiny and regulation of self-proclaimed prophets and miracle-sellers, others contend that critics should be more mindful of how they express themselves to avoid offending genuine believers.
